5 Key Questions to Avoid 90% of Transformer Selection Mistakes

Do you know the biggest pitfall in transformer selection?

It is not expensive pricing, nor confusing brand choices. The real problem is that most buyers ask the wrong questions from the very beginning.

After years of exporting transformers to Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, we have summarized 5 core questions. By confirming these points, you can avoid over 90% of on-site failures, rework costs and quality risks.

1. Is your project indoor or outdoor?

Many buyers blindly choose dry-type transformers simply for better safety performance.

However, if your project is located in West Africa or tropical regions with 40℃+ high temperature and 80%+ humidity, dry-type transformers often face poor heat dissipation, dust accumulation and damp insulation. In such harsh outdoor environments, oil-immersed transformers are more stable and durable.

Choosing the wrong installation type is the No.1 hidden cause of continuous overheating and abnormal trips.

2. What is your exact total load power?

Never choose transformer capacity based on “approximate estimation”.

You must calculate the total actual load and reserve a 20%–30% engineering margin. Without sufficient margin, the transformer will run under long-term overload. Overloaded coils generate excessive heat and will eventually burn out.

Accurate capacity matching is the foundation of long-term stable operation.

3. Does your local grid have severe voltage fluctuation?

Voltage surge and fluctuation are very common in Middle Eastern and African power grids.

If the transformer insulation tolerance is insufficient, insulation breakdown and flashover will easily occur.

Standard-quality oil-immersed and dry-type transformers reserve sufficient dielectric strength. However, many low-cost manufacturers downgrade insulation class to cut costs.

What voltage withstand test standard does this transformer follow?

If the answer is vague or unclear, avoid cooperation.

4. Do you have regular maintenance personnel on site?

Different transformer types require different maintenance plans.

  • Dry-type transformers need regular dust cleaning and fan inspection to avoid heat accumulation.
  • Oil-immersed transformers require periodic oil temperature checks, sealing inspection, and breathing silica gel replacement.

Many small distributors ignore silica gel replacement. Once moisture enters the tank, insulation performance drops rapidly, and the transformer may fail within one year.

Choose the transformer type according to your actual on-site maintenance capacity.

5. Have you verified the manufacturer’s production process?

Do not trust only promotional pictures.

Before placing bulk orders, ask the supplier to provide real coil winding videos and workshop footage. Focus on two core details:

  1. Pure enameled copper wire (not aluminum or copper-clad aluminum)
  2. Complete vacuum impregnation process

These two processes directly determine the transformer’s anti-overload ability, insulation stability and overall service life.

Transformer selection is never about price or brand. It is about matching your environment, grid condition, load demand, maintenance capability and factory quality.
