Saved 300,000 Project Cost in 3 Months: What Did This Distributor Do?

Can you guess what this distributor did to cut 300,000 of project costs? It was not tough bargaining, bulk stock reservation, nor switching to a cheaper supplier. He made one critical change: replaced indoor oil-immersed transformers with dry-type transformers.

That’s right. This single switch saved him money equivalent to a BMW X3.

Let’s walk through this real case. The original plan adopted conventional oil-immersed transformers for an indoor power distribution project. Indoor installation of oil-immersed transformers requires mandatory oil collection pits and dedicated ventilation ducts. The annual fire inspection cost alone was 20,000, together with constant risks of oil leakage and fire hazards.

Based on the site conditions, we suggested SCB13 dry-type transformers. Dry-type transformers contain no insulating oil. There is no risk of oil leakage or fire. They can be installed directly indoors and easily pass fire approval, eliminating expensive one-time investment in oil pits and fireproof structures. For this project’s operating condition, SCB13 dry-type transformers reduce power loss by 15%~20% compared with the original ordinary oil-immersed transformers, saving roughly 50,000 on electricity bills each year. For the original oil transformers operating under high temperature, cooling fans required monthly inspection and replacement, costing 15,000 per year. Dry-type transformers are equipped with built-in intelligent temperature control systems and require little manual maintenance.

Project calculation: The dry-type transformers only cost an extra 8,000 at purchase. Combined savings from fire facilities, electricity and maintenance reached 300,000 in total project budget.

Key selection rule: For conventional indoor power distribution projects, dry-type transformers are the preferred option. If oil-immersed transformers are adopted indoors, complete fire protection and oil collection facilities are compulsory, which greatly increases overall project cost. Oil-immersed transformers are not poor quality; they are more suitable for outdoor and high-power applications.

Many distributors only chase the lowest unit price when sourcing. But here is the truth: the lowest upfront price usually brings the highest total lifecycle cost. Wrong selection will trigger a series of costly troubles, including fire rework, production shutdown and equipment failure.
