Typhoon & Flood Prevention: Safe Installation & Post-Disaster O&M for Southeast Asia Transformers

Southeast Asia is one of the regions with the most frequent typhoons and floods in the world (Philippines, Vietnam’s central coast, Indonesia’s Sumatra), where typhoon winds can reach 150km/h, and flood water levels can rise by 1-2 meters in a short time. These extreme weather conditions easily cause transformer displacement, water immersion, wiring damage, and even short circuits and fires, so targeted protection measures and post-disaster O&M are crucial.

In terms of installation protection, transformers should be installed on reinforced concrete foundations raised 50cm above the ground (80cm in flood-prone areas) to prevent flood water immersion. The base should be fixed with anti-loosening high-strength bolts and steel brackets to avoid displacement or tipping caused by strong typhoon winds. A waterproof cover should be installed on the top of the transformer, and drainage devices should be set around the foundation to divert rainwater quickly and avoid water accumulation.

Transformer installation sites should avoid low-lying areas, riverbanks, and wind-prone open areas; if installed in urban areas, it should be away from tall buildings and trees to prevent falling objects from damaging the transformer during typhoons. After typhoons or floods, the transformer must be inspected comprehensively before restarting: check the foundation for cracks, fixations for looseness, wiring for damage, and internal components for water ingress.

If water ingress is found, the transformer should be shut down immediately, dried with a low-heat fan, and insulation resistance and voltage tests should be conducted (insulation resistance ≥10 MΩ, voltage output stable) before restarting. The following table shows the key inspection items and standards after typhoons and floods:

Inspection ItemQualified StandardProcessing Measures for Unqualified Items
Foundation & FixationNo cracks, bolts tightRepair foundation cracks, retighten or replace bolts
Wiring & BushingNo damage, no loose connectionsReplace damaged wiring/bushings, retighten connections
Insulation Resistance≥10 MΩDry the transformer, re-test; replace insulation if necessary
Oil Quality (Oil-Immersed)No water content, no turbidityFilter or replace transformer oil
