Microgrid equipment depends on the system architecture and connection requirements. For projects that require a medium-voltage connection, Unita supplies transformer substations and distribution equipment. Share your system diagram, voltage requirements and site conditions so we can review the required configuration.

Who This Is For

This page is for projects where the transformer substation and distribution equipment form part of the electrical scope of a solar-storage microgrid:

  • Project owners, developers and contractors defining the electrical scope of a microgrid that connects at a medium-voltage level.
  • Projects where a step-up or distribution substation is required between the generation and storage equipment and the point of connection.
  • Projects where the transformer, switchgear and low-voltage distribution equipment are to be supplied as a defined package.

If the system is entirely low voltage, the equipment scope differs; see Small Low-Voltage Systems below.

Equipment for Your Project

Solar and battery storage step-up transformer substations, switchgear, and low-voltage distribution equipment can form part of the electrical scope. The required equipment, protection, metering and communication interfaces are reviewed against the project documents. PCS, batteries, EMS and other system components are included only where expressly agreed in the quotation.

Define the Electrical Interfaces

Provide the generation sources, load requirements, inverter or PCS output, connection voltage and any available single-line diagram. Grid-connected and island operation require system-level assessment, including the control architecture and protection scheme. Supplying a transformer substation does not by itself establish island-operation capability.

Small Low-Voltage Systems

Small village, island or commercial microgrids may not require medium-voltage step-up equipment. We review the actual architecture rather than applying one equipment arrangement to every project.

Information to Share

  • Project country, location and current stage.
  • Generation sources, storage arrangement and load requirements.
  • Available single-line diagram and inverter or PCS specifications.
  • Required connection voltage and applicable project or grid documents.
  • Site conditions, proposed installation arrangement and requested supply scope.

If some information is not yet available, share what you have and identify the items that still need review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every microgrid need a step-up transformer?

No. The need depends on the voltage levels, connection arrangement and system architecture. A low-voltage system may use a different equipment scope.

Are batteries, PCS and EMS included?

Their procurement and integration responsibilities are confirmed in the project quotation. State whether you require these components or will nominate other suppliers.

Can the equipment operate in island mode?

Island operation must be assessed at system level. Share the proposed control, PCS and protection arrangement for review; it is not an automatic feature of a transformer substation.
